Interesting Tidbits: Significance of eagle feathers

Eagle feathers are sacred to Native Americans; symbolic of trust, honor, strength, wisdom, power, and freedom among a multitude of other noble attributes. Feathers are not simply acquired for they must be earned; historically only given to chiefs, braves and warriors. To be given one is tantamount to an American Soldier receiving a Medal of Honor.

A Golden or Bald Eagle feather is one of the most rewarding honors to be bestowed upon a Native American. Placed in the headdress of warriors, eagle feathers represent the victories and successes achieved in battle. These battles were not necessarily with other tribes; a truly courageous deed like fighting off a bear was also a way to earn a feather. However, the brave was not permitted to wear his prized award until he went in front of the tribal court and retold the story of his victory.

Once an American Indian receives a feather, he must respect and take proper care of it. Many hang them in their homes as it is disrespectful to hide it away. Like the American flag, an eagle feather must be handled with care and can never be dropped on the ground. The reason for the significance is attributable to the belief that eagles represent strength and honor and have a special connection with the heavens since they fly so close. . The bird's spirit is believed to be alive in the very feathers taken from it.
